Re-Conned!
Sac-Con was AMAZING! It was such a humbling experience to go to such a small con and come out energized and invigorated to draw and write more comics. Mike and I walked around Scottish Rite unknowing what to anticipate since both of us hadn’t been to a convention in such a long period of time. What we witnessed there was nothing less than inspiring. Aside from the numerous toys, comics and collectibles, we met great and wonderful individuals who all were willing to offer us advice, feedback, and encouragement to shoot for this lofty endeavor you see before you. Let me showcase a couple of those fine folks that we shot the shiz with.
First UP… CLARK CASTILLO and MEL SMITH!
Writers of Image Comic’s Dead Ahead.
The comic is about fisherman, zombies and the ocean liner between them. I loves me some zombie flicks so I couldn’t wait to see what they had to offer. Genuinely nice guys. They both shared insights about the industry, the joy of writing comic books, and what their favorite zombie movies. I wanted to talk to them all day but there was still so much Con left in the day.
Ben Schwartz, owner of ECV Press, and his crew of talents, Hainanu Saulque, Rich Curtze, and Paul Allen, offered helpful words and informative advice as they showcased their skills as a panel to a modest crowd. If any of you have read the Sacramento’s newspapers in the past months, one of their main properties, Hank Houston has been receiving some press for being in in the top 10 of Plantinum Studios national comic book challenge. They willfully answered questions about comic book submissions to their company, chatted up their upcoming books, gave us fuel to pursue a life of comic booking. I can’t complain about the free stuff they gave out, too. I am pretty sure that they will be receiving a submission authored by Mike and I within a couple of months. Whether its good or not, that I’m not sure of.
Lost in the Dark Press
Next up was Lost in the Dark Press. God Damn! This guy had a nice setup. Arguably, the nicest at the Con. Well, no one is going to argue because the con looked like the inside of a garage that a sketchy uncle might live in. I was actually suprised that the traffic to his booth wasn’t as heavy. Maybe being wedged between bootleg dvds and an asian mart didn’t help. Regardless, Steve Buell is good people. I copped and read the book Fragile Prophet (Ain’t It Cool News’ Best Indie Comic 2006) that him and his bud Jeff Davidson put out, and blew right through it. Well thought out story and his art is clean! Anyway, Steve is a Sac local, so show him some hometown love, visit his site, and buy their swag.
Tone is a very talented artist. Self-taught skills and currently does work at Bongo. Comparing my drawing talent to his would be like comparing Shawshank Redemption to Harold and Kumar Esape from Guantanamo. He is so down to earth and has a great sense of humor. I monitored young artists as they approached him and he offered the nicest constructive criticism I ever heard in my life. I, myself, wouldn’t be so nice. I picked up a Skeletor print and he was kind enough show support and throw up our sticker up at his booth. He offered some insight about the industry and drawing which I absorbed like a shammy.
Finally, Emonic (aka Emo Gonzales)
My diet is spoiled because what Emonic offered was a feast for my eyes. I think I am diabetic because his penmenship was soooooo sweet. His talents were a sight to behold as he painted up an orginal design so casually. While I picked up a sketchbook and a print, Emo was generous enough to “sketch” a lil’ something for me on the back end of the book. This was more than a sketch, though, because Emo took his sweet time to give me a product I would appreciate for a long time. Anywhos, Emo and his brother Chemix, encouraged me to start up a deviant art page so when I get some artwork together, I will shoot a link to that site.
Sunday was a great day. I hope that soon, Mike and I will have a booth at a con so that we may share our goodies to the rest of the world.
